“Water Lilies” by Zahari Hamidon, 2018, Pen and Ink on paper
Lisa Marder stated that as you look at the painting and try to copy it ask yourself questions such as the following: “What color did the artist lay on first?”, “What kind of brush did the artist use?”, “What direction is the brush stroke going?”,”How did the artist make that plane recede?”, “Is that edge soft or hard?”, “Did the artist apply the paint thinly or thickly?”
The image above shows two different drawing on the left is a drawing by Vincent Van Gogh, and the right is my attempt to copy the stroke by Van Gogh. The insight gain from experience is even though we have our own subject matter but the ‘style’ matters. By emulating the ‘style’ of Van Gogh, I am able to experience what Van Gogh is experiencing. You will be patient dragging your pen and control the ink to get the touch of Van Gogh. Try it, and it works.
